7 Things to do in London for International Women's Day

International Women's Day UK

International Women’s Day is upon us, with events happening all over London and the rest of the world on 8 March, 2018. No matter what your background, class status, ethnicity or religious beliefs are, it’s a day of celebrating female empowerment and reclaiming the female voice that is so often silenced. International Women’s Day is a beautiful chance for the raging feminists and activists to do their thing, but also encourages those who perhaps don’t identify with a particular group but still want to make a difference. Participating in such a large scale and positive event is a truly magical and inspiring experience, one you won’t soon forget.

If you’re looking for something to do but aren’t sure where to start, we’ve compiled a list of the best live events, as well as some suggestions for the introverts among us, or for those who can’t make it to an event but still want to celebrate in their own way. Tell us what you’re planning in the comments below!

Get to a live event

It doesn’t get much better than feeling the energy levels at a live event, particularly one that is all about making a change for the better. Live events will enable you to meet lots of like-minded people, listen to inspiring women talk about their experiences, and learn what you can do to forge a better future for yourself and the women who will come after you. There are also plenty of events that are of a more lighthearted nature, focussed on bringing women together to do something fun. Our top picks are:

Women of the World Festival

WOW – Women of the World festival celebrates women and girls, and looks at the obstacles that stop them from achieving their potential. Around the world, individuals and communities are insisting on the simple proposition that women and girls must have equal rights and asking the question: why is gender equality taking so long?

Southbank Centre's WOW – Women of the World festival is a global network of festivals which provides a platform for celebrating what has been achieved, and exploring all the ways we can change the world for the better.
In the year that marks the 100th anniversary since some women got the vote in the UK, and when #MeToo shook the world, we bring together artists, writers, politicians, comedians, activists and more for the 8th annual WOW London at Southbank Centre.

Reach out to the women who matter to you most

Major change on a global level is important, but it’s also lovely to reach out to the women in your own life, and show them how much their influence as made your life richer. Host a brunch, book a table at a fancy restaurant, watch some movies at home together or simply pick up the phone, and let the most special women in your life how amazing they are. If appropriate, consider using it as an opportunity to learn about their struggles as women, and ask your older relatives about how society has changed in their lifetime. And don't forget to spoil them a beautiful bouquet of flowers!
